The House

We do not decorate walls. We sculpt them.

Wallpaper goes on a wall. A relief becomes the wall. It is another material, another gesture, and another trade.

The origin

Hovnan Shahbazyan has been drawing since 2002. Art director, co-founder of the Futuris Architect studio, he was looking for a material that would hold at the scale of a whole wall without repeating like a printed pattern.

Meeting Suren Movsisyan, an engineer, brought the second half of the answer: a casting process that makes the drawing reproducible without taking away its depth. Wall Deco was founded in Armenia in 2013.

The craft

The pattern is modelled digitally, then 3D printed to make the mould. Casting is in gypsum, a natural mineral with no harmful substances. The piece that comes out of the mould is worked by hand: that is where the arris is cut and the shadow gains its edge.

Printography, an Italian process, adds the second family: printing that follows the relief instead of imitating it. The two techniques do not serve the same wall, and the project adviser will say which suits yours.

The catalogue holds 450 references, of which 44 are signed by 6 architect-designers, credited on every sheet.

The reach

Wall Deco France sells these pieces from Beausoleil, on the Monaco border. The showroom is visited by appointment: a relief is judged in raking light, which no photograph conveys.

Pieces have gone to more than ten countries, in private villas, hotels and company headquarters. Laying is carried out by our fitters or supported alongside your own.

What we hold to

  1. People first

    A project begins with listening, not with a catalogue. We survey the substrate, the constraints and the use before proposing a reference.

  2. A sound material

    The gypsum we cast is a natural mineral, with no harmful substances. It goes in a child’s bedroom as readily as in a hotel lobby.

  3. Creation first

    A pattern can be redrawn to hold an imposed format. It is workshop work, and we say when it cannot be done.

  4. Technique in service of the hand

    3D printing draws the mould, the hand finishes the piece. Neither is enough on its own, and it is their assembly that makes the relief.

  5. Collective commitment

    From drawing to laying, the same people follow the project. The fitter knows the setting-out, because he read it before climbing the scaffold.
